Dal Dhokli Recipe



 Dal Dhokli is a traditional Gujarati dish made with wheat flour dumplings (dhokli) cooked in a spicy lentil soup (dal). Here's a recipe for making Dal Dhokli:


Ingredients for the dough:


1 cup wheat flour

1/2 tsp turmeric powder

1/2 tsp red chili powder

1/2 tsp carom seeds (ajwain)

Salt as per taste

Water as needed

Ingredients for the dal:


1 cup split pigeon peas (toor dal)

1 onion, finely chopped

1 tomato, finely chopped

1 green chili, finely chopped

1 tsp ginger-garlic paste

1 tsp cumin seeds

1/2 tsp turmeric powder

1/2 tsp red chili powder

1 tsp coriander powder

1/2 tsp garam masala powder

Salt as per taste

2 tbsp oil

Chopped coriander leaves

Instructions:


In a bowl, mix together the wheat flour, turmeric powder, red chili powder, carom seeds, salt, and enough water to make a soft dough. Knead thoroughly and set aside for 15 minutes.


Add the toor dal, 3 cups of water, turmeric powder, and salt to a pressure cooker. Cook for 3-4 whistles, or until the dal is tender.


Heat the oil in a skillet and add the cumin seeds. Let them to sputter.


Sauté the chopped onions until they turn golden brown.


Add the ginger-garlic paste and green chile, if using. Cook for 1 minute.


Simmer for 10 minutes, or until the tomatoes are soft and mushy.


Combine the red chilli powder, coriander powder, and garam masala powder in a mixing bowl. Combine thoroughly.


Mix in the cooked dal thoroughly. Add extra water as needed to attain the required consistency.

Let the dal come to a boil and then simmer for 5-6 minutes.


Divide the dough into equal-sized balls and roll them into small discs.


Add the rolled discs (dhokli) into the boiling dal one by one. Cook for 10-12 minutes or until the dhokli is cooked and soft.


Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or roti and enjoy the delicious Dal Dhokli!


Note: You can also add other vegetables like carrot, beans, or bottle gourd to the dal for more nutrition.
